German Chocolate Brownie

German Chocolate Brownie

A German Chocolate Brownie will never be complete without German Chocolate Coconut Frosting!

But, you may be wondering why this confection is labeled “German”….

In case you didn’t know….  There really is a difference between chocolate made in the United States & chocolate made in Europe. Of course, both Europe & America make their chocolate from Cacao Beans. But in the US, milk chocolate is only regulated at a minimum of 10% cocoa solids, while Europe must adhere to a 20% minimum. Although there are higher percentages of cocoa solids in darker chocolates, Europe is still regulated higher than the United States. #Homemade

Since Europe has a higher cocoa volume, their chocolate’s texture is softer than America’s. European chocolate also allows vegetable fats, while the US does not. So, this ingredient also adds to softer chocolate in Europe. America’s chocolate typically contains more cocoa butter & this also attributes to the glossy surface. Did you know that cocoa butter is more of a “solid” fat & this contributes to less Melting?

You may also notice a difference in the flavor between European & American chocolate. Europe Only allows sugar, while the United States allows additives like Corn Syrup…. Did you know that Corn Syrup tastes sweeter than Sugar?

But is a German Chocolate Brownie or Geman Chocolate Cake really German?

Fine Wine Delivered

Actually, No.

Way back in 1852, Samuel German invented dark baking chocolate. At the time he was an American Baker for the Baker’s Chocolate Company. So, they named this new chocolate just for him! But it wasn’t until 1957, that Mrs. George Clay concocted a truly delicious cake using Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate bars. And ever since her recipe was published, it’s been shared over & over again….

So, now we take our German Chocolate Coconut Frosting, add it to our Super Moist Homemade Brownies, and Get Culinary Perfection!

Of course, you can purchase a box of brownie mix & a container of Coconut Pecan Frosting & making this treat super simple…

Then make this Frosting too…. #Homemade

Ingredients you’ll need for German Chocolate Coconut Frosting:

  • ½ Cup Butter
  • ½ Cup Light Brown Sugar
  • ½ Cup Sugar
  • 3 Large Egg Yolks (Room Temperature)
  • ¾ Cup Evaporated Milk
  • 1 TBS. Vanilla
  • 1 cup Chopped Pecans
  • 1 Cup Shredded Coconut (Sweetened if you desire)

Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in both Sugars until melted. Remove from heat & allow to cool. Whisk in Room Temperature Egg Yolks. Mix Well.

If you add cold eggs to a hot butter mixture, it will cook the eggs and Not mix well. We don’t want that to happen…..

Add Milk, whisk & return to heat. Continue to whisk & frosting will thicken. Remove from heat. Stir in Vanilla. Fold in Pecans & Coconut. Allow cooling.

Now, no matter what way you’ve made your brownie batter… You can add this Frosting to Mini Brownie Bites or an 8×8 pan.

Preheat Oven to 350°

If you are baking Mini Brownie Bites, just add a teaspoon of frosting to each bite. Then, you’ll also want to push the frosting into the batter so it is partly covered.

If you are baking your German Chocolate Brownie in an 8×8, you’ll want to set aside a ½ cup of batter. Then spread the remaining batter evenly in your dish.

Now you can either, make 3 rows by 3 rows with One Tablespoon of German Chocolate Coconut Frosting. Or you can just pour ½ cup of Frosting over the batter. Both ways work… It just depends on how you want your swirl to look.

Then take your ½ cup of reserved batter & randomly drop one spoonful in a 3 x 3-row pattern or however you want…

Lastly, take a knife & lightly draw through the batter in 4 straight lines, then reverse & go across with 4 lines…..

10-12 minutes for Brownie Bites
