Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

 Our Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole is a Family Favorite. This makes a spectacular breakfast, but also a stupendous dessert!

That’s not to say our Blueberry, Raspberry, or Strawberry Flavors aren’t loved. They just don’t get the requests like our Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole!

Another detail that makes our Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole special is the Caramel sauce topping! We include the simple recipe below. 

Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

You can prepare this casserole prior to baking! We Do! We love to have all the prep done so it goes in the oven first thing in the morning!

If we are going to serve it for dessert, it’s still possible to get it prepped & out of the way. Then while you are eating dinner, Bake It! The aroma alone will have everyone clearing their plate to make room for dessert. Or go ahead & do Your Fave Flavor. Like Raspberry?

Ingredients:

You can also easily double the recipe if you feel the need…….

Casserole:

  • 6 Pieces of Bread (We prefer Buttermilk but you can use whichever type you like)
  • 8 Oz Cubed Cream Cheese (small ½ in. squares & no need to soften!)
  • 1 Large Apple – Leave the peel on, but core & cube into bite size pieces
  • 6 Eggs – Beaten
  • 1 Cup Milk (We use whole milk)
  • 1 Teas. Vanilla
  • 1Tbs Cinnamon
  • ¾ Cup Kraft Caramel Bits

Prep Your Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

Pre-heat your oven to 400 Degrees. Butter an 8×8 Baking Dish, or use a non-stick spray. If you double the ingredients, a 13×9 Dish works.

Cube the bread into ½ to 1-inch size pieces. Dump all those cubes into your baking dish & bake for about 12 – 18 minutes, stirring several times so all of the cubes have equal “Air” time. You can also spread them on a flat baking sheet if you prefer.

Whether it is a myth or not, stale or dried-out bread seems to soak up liquid better than fresh bread. We have tried this recipe with both dried bread & fresh and prefer it dried. The end-game is to have “crunchy” bread but don’t let it burn.

While the bread is baking, cube the cream cheese & prep your apples. We like Honey Crisp apples but choose your favorite apple. We do NOT peel the apple.

The skin of an apple is its most nutrient-rich part. And our family has never complained, so we leave the peel on. (It also saves a little time!)

So, just core & cube the apple(s) into bite-size pieces. Microwave the apple for around 3 minutes just to soften them a bit. We like ours somewhat crunchy. So, if you prefer your apples soft, then microwave a couple more minutes.

Once the apples are at the desired softness, stir them with the Cinnamon to coat.

Once your bread is done baking, remove half the cubes & set them aside. Layer in the Apple cubes, Cream Cheese cubes & Caramel Bits then top with the remaining bread. Pour the milk mixture into your casserole dish. You may need to push the bread down to ensure it all gets wet. If you are waiting to bake later, cover & refrigerate.

Bake & Make Caramel Sauce!

If you use a glass baking dish & have refrigerated it, it needs to warm to room temperature before putting it into a pre-heated oven!

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Before you put your Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole into the oven, stir just a tiny bit so some apples are peeking through. Cover your casserole with foil & bake for 30 minutes. At the end of 30 minutes, uncover & bake for another 30 minutes.

We make the Caramel Sauce!

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 Cup Salted Butter
  • 3 Tbs. Sugar
  • 2/3 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 Teas. Vanilla
Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

In a saucepan, melt the butter & sugar over medium-low heat. Stir until golden brown. Whisk in the heavy cream slowly, continuing to stir. Increase the heat & bring to a gentle boil. Then reduce the heat & allow to simmer for about 7-10 minutes. Continue stirring. Once the sauce thickens, remove from heat & whisk in the vanilla. #CaramelApple
