Puppy Popsicles

Puppy Popsicles are a Must-Have on hot summer days! Did you know that a dog’s internal temperature runs anywhere from 1.4 to 3.9 degrees HOTTER than a human’s internal temperature? That doesn’t seem like a LOT to you?

What temperature do you usually have your heat set at? Jack it up 3 degrees. Now, go running around the house doing your chores. Are you sweating yet?

If you are NOT sweating, go ahead & add a fur coat. Or even just a jacket. Now, go running around your house doing those same chores.

Many of us LOVE Sunny summer weather. But since we are all made a little differently, we also have our individual comfort zones. For instance, 80 Degrees is absolutely PERFECT weather, if you ask me. But that can easily change if there is NO shade or a breeze is completely absent!  On the flip side, a sunny 80-degree day can feel so much colder if the wind blows too hard or I can’t get out of the shade.

But if YOU think it’s HOT, then Your Dog is Hotter! And what happens when you are hot?

Warm Days & Puppy Popsicles

You Sweat, right? Or maybe you “Glow”? You also (probably) like something cold to drink. If you can’t or don’t replenish the liquid you are sweating out, then you are in DANGER! You could easily become dehydrated. But there is WORSE! You could suffer Heat Stroke! But, as a human, you can take off your fur coat……

Did you know Dogs do NOT sweat like we humans? They do NOT sweat through their skin! Dogs are able to “cool off” through the pads on their paws & panting. And since a pup has a built-in fur coat, how much hotter is he or she than You?

So, how do we keep our pups cool when it’s Hot? Easy! We make sure they have sufficient shade. Of course, plenty of water is readily available. And don’t forget our Puppy Popsicles!

Now you can make super easy frozen treats for your dogs. Just add some ice cubes to their water dish. Or you can also freeze Bone Broth.

Have you ever drunk a TON of water at One Time? If you have, then you probably felt a little bloated……. Keep that in mind if & when your dog gets Hot!

Of course, water is accessible for our dogs at all times. But there are times they are playing & do NOT want to stop for anything! Then, one of them finally decides she needs a drink. She’s So Thirsty! But this is where I need to regulate how much water she drinks all at once. Our Sophie, will literally put her snout into the bowl & keep drinking until she is sputtering. The first time she did this, I thought she was dying!!

Now, we know that Playtime has to have Break time. Of course, Sophie doesn’t agree……

Break Time with Puppy Popsicles

So, when we pull these frozen dog treats out of the freezer, both girls are happy to take a break from Play Time!

What you need:

  • Silicone Molds
  • 2 (15 oz) Cans Pumpkin Puree OR Carrot Puree
  • ½ Cup Pure Peanut Butter
***** Make sure your Peanut Butter is Animal Approved. There are some brands of peanut butter that contain Xylitol. This sweetener is Toxic for dogs. And your pup is happy without ANY added sugar in his or her peanut butter anyway!
  • Whip your ingredients together
  • Fill up your molds.
  • Freeze for a couple of hours.
  • And Tada! All done!

We use small, medium or larger molds…. But use whichever size or shape is your Pup’s Fave!!!

Consequently, the BEST thing about these Frozen Dog Treats is that Rover has to Take Some Time to eat them….…… So, he gets the benefit of cooling down & replenishing some needed nutrients, without slurping up that water too fast! But, if you are concerned with your dog having too many calories, Freezable Chew Toys are an awesome choice! And while our pups are cooling down & relaxing, we find a shady spot to Refresh ourselves with our favorite beverages too!

Heat Stroke or Too Hot?

When your pup is panting like crazy, or worse yet, has no desire to move around, this is a Danger Sign. If those signs are accompanied by vomiting & diarrhea, be concerned. If you notice your pup NOT wanting to quit drinking or if his tongue & gums are Bright Red, he is Too Hot!

This Pup needs to Cool Down! Remember how a dog cools down? Through their pads on their paws? Also, through panting. If you can dip your pups’ feet in tepid water (Not Ice Water), this will help cool her down without shocking her. Make sure she has shade. If you are inside, a non-carpeted floor is best. You could even provide a damp towel for your pup to lay on……

But if your dog’s temperature continues to climb, there is a danger of Heat Stroke. If your dog is stumbling around like he’s had too much to drink, or if he collapses, you need to make a rapid visit to the vet. He could lose consciousness or, even worse, have a seizure, if he does not receive care in a timely manner. If heat stroke goes untreated, your pup could suffer kidney failure, paralysis, weakening of muscles, loss of brain function, even attentiveness, or Death!

Of course, we hope this NEVER, Ever happens to any of our furry friends.

But thank goodness for Pet Insurance if you do need to go to the Vet due to an emergency!  Even without an emergency, there are all those wellness checks……… Not to mention when you know something is wrong, but can’t figure out why Rover is not himself…… Then there are immunizations & vaccinations ……………… So, Pet Lovers everywhere: Read about who, what, & why we appreciate our Pet Insurance Right Here.
