But WHY go from a Pocket to A Purse?
Purses, pockets, & carry-alls have been around a LONG time. Over 5000 years ago men were carrying around things they needed to survive. The proof is in! The Iceman, nicknamed Ötzi, was discovered in 1991 in the Alps. Along with his mummified body were his ax, knife, arrows, bow, some food & also fire-making accessories. Now, his fire-making accessories are a little different from what we use today. But he obviously wanted a hot meal even while away from home. Of course, being in the Alps, he probably needed those fire-making supplies for warmth too. But, in all seriousness, there was some evidence of (what-we-would-call-today) a backpack. Plus, he had a pouch sewn to his belt. So, he obviously had a need to Carry More than what He Could Carry…. #ScarfStyle
If you think about it, you only have 2 hands! So, if you are running around herding your sheep, you just might need to scare away some predator. Hence, your bow & arrows. Plus, you might get hungry. And unless someone’s bringing you lunch, the local drive-thru is a Long Way Away…. And if you want that lunch hot? You might just want to bring some Food & Fire-making tools …. So how do you carry everything around with you?
Your arms would be so full due to carrying all this stuff! Then would you quickly grab your weapon when that predator attacks?
Obviously, Ötzi knew a pocket wasn’t enough to carry all his needed supplies! So, was this when a Pocket to a Purse was Born? That pouch that was sewn onto his belt? That could have been the very first Hands-Free Purse! Or maybe a tool belt?
A Pocket to A Purse On The Go
Somedays we only need a pocket to carry all our stuff! But when you’re running around & all of a sudden you see that One Thing you need to own! This is perfect. Because you can just morph your sarong into a tote bag!
Then there are those days you just want your Hands Free to enjoy the beautiful day. And NOT lug around a purse. Maybe you want to take in a ball game & you don’t want to deal with a purse. But you still need your Identification, maybe your wallet, and possibly your phone, right?
So, how about this perfect hidden pocket that takes the place of your purse? What a Solution, right?! Plus, just think of the added security! You no longer need to worry about keeping an eye on your purse at all times!
Pockets, Purses & History
Men have had pockets on, or in, their clothing for a very long time. So, why didn’t Women’s Clothing? Well, we can go into a whole big debate about that……
But, suffice it to say, while women did without pockets on their clothing, they still got creative! With petticoats worn under her gowns, most women constructed a “purse” that she tied around her waist! Of course, this led to even more ingenuity, and an inner pocket was sewn into petticoats. But this was very inconvenient when trying to get to her stuff. Although one plus was keeping these things (sometimes of a very personal nature) hidden from prying eyes! #ScarfStyle

Can you imagine trying to get to something through all those skirts, petticoats, and under-petticoats? And it’s not like she could just hike up those skirts to see what she was doing! It’s no wonder why some women slit holes in their skirts to make access easier! Plus, we can only speculate on the Awkwardness of a “purse” bouncing around under those skirts. Just imagine running around with that purse banging up against your legs! Of course, running was frowned upon!
But then the styles started to change! When those huge skirts started to slim down, where were you supposed to hide your purse? Just like today, yesterday’s woman has a sense of style. So, some may have wanted pockets & others didn’t.
But yesteryear’s woman left money matters to her man if she was a part of that “class”. Hence, she didn’t need to carry around a large purse. Furthermore, a woman that toted around a large purse was treated with disdain. It was also assumed that she “had” to work. Being an “independent” woman was an insult. Consequently, as more & more women pursued a life outside the home, the more she needed to carry her stuff with her. It’s easy now, to see the development of the designer purse, handbag, clutch, briefcase, tote, etc…..…..
So, now that women have the vote, actually, wear pants & can choose to pursue a career, it’s only fair that we can have pockets too!
And in all fairness, men can carry purses too! But we can also all agree there are just times you want to take as little with you as possible & NOT carry a purse. So, we have so many answers to that fashionable issue….
