Maybe Tailgating is a ritual for your group of friends, just like mine! There are certain “must-haves” in our group. Like those Hot Wings, I mentioned! If Jerry forgets to bring the wings, he shouldn’t even bother showing up! But nowadays, it’s also about “who is bringing the GAME?” Just once there was miscommunication & it did not get brought! That was NOT pretty!
When did Tailgating Begin?
It is thought that the very first “tailgate” party was for the game between Rutgers & Princeton in 1869. We are truly appreciative that this tradition began, no matter its beginnings. But we all know you can have a Tailgate Party at any event, not only for Football.
It’s funny how Food & People come together to watch & participate in events.
During the Civil War times, people would bring picnic baskets to watch battles between the North & South. Maybe that was the equivalent, then of us watching TV with popcorn, now? Of course, we could discuss times even older… Like executions, public beheadings. Why would you want to watch that & eat a snack? But people did!
You know those chow-wagons of the old west? I think they were the True Founders of our Tailgating traditions. These were true entrepreneurs. They recognized the need for Meals on Wheels way back then……. Now, that’s what I call socializing. Grab that fiddle, sing some songs & Dance! Of course, after eating all that great food!
Another way that tailgating may have come about was to Show Off Your Automobile! There is nothing like a bunch of automobile enthusiasts getting together to check out all the wheels. And what else are you going to do with that tailgate when you’re sitting in a parking lot with a bunch of friends?
Now, if you’re like some today, you may not even make it into the stadium to watch that game or event! And That’s OK!
