Most argue that the credit for being the first cosmetic chemist or perfumer goes to a woman named Tapputi from Mesopotamia. She and her assistant, Nina created methods by which to distill flowers, oils & aromatic roots to make perfumes. We could debate that her invented techniques and tools were the blueprints for perfumers’ tools & techniques of today!
Perfume has been around for centuries. Egypt may have been the birthplace of perfume. Or it might have been India. It might even have been China. Regardless of the argument, human beings almost – always are concerned with their personal aroma! #FragranceAddict
Can you imagine being Indiana Jones? As you search, you uncover a primitive laboratory! An ancient perfumery in Pyrgos, Cyprus WAS uncovered in 2003. Stills, mixing bowls, funnels & perfume bottles were found! Seriously! They were over 4000 years old!
What an amazing & impressive discovery! And they were not primitive at all! They used extracts of lavender, bay, rosemary, pine, or coriander as some of their ingredients. And their techniques are some of the very same in use today! We also use many of the same scents!
Can you imagine finding a book written by an ancient Arabian chemist? And that book has over a hundred recipes for fragrant oils, salves, perfumes & “medicines”? That discovery shows human beings have not changed much over the centuries!

Perfumes & Secret Recipes
Human beings were & are always experimenting! A Persian chemist, Avicenna, invented the process of extracting oils from flowers in the 9th Century. He influenced perfume making. But he was also known as a physician, philosopher & scientist. His distillation process is also still in use today.
In the 1200s, Italy’s monks invented many recipes for specific perfumes! The most popular, Santa Maria Novella, can be found still today! In the later 1300’s Queen Elizabeth of Hungary “requested” a perfume to be made. Some say, she Demanded! The legend says this perfume was made to help her with headaches. This was the first scented oil blended in an alcohol solution. Consequently, Hungary Water is also still in use today.
In the 16th century, Catherine de Medici moved to France after her marriage to Henry II. She took her personal & devoted perfumer, Renato Bianco (or in French: Rene’ le Florentin) with her. The legends state that it was he that invented Catherine’s habit of wearing perfume on her gloves and body. Supposedly, she had an aversion to others’ body odors! At this time in history, one did not wash regularly! Also, his laboratory was connected by a secret passage to Catherine’s apartments! This was not due to any romantic notions! Consequently, this was so a perfume’s recipe would not be stolen!
As the perfume industry grew in France, the cultivation of flowers grew. An essence needs many flowers to make even one ounce! Between the 16th & 17th centuries, we know it was common to avoid bathing. So, we can only imagine the aroma all those unwashed bodies created! But due to this practice, purchasing perfume was very popular by the wealthy and upper classes. #PerfumeLovers
Why Wear Perfume
By the 18th century, cultivating plants and flowers specifically for their fragrant qualities was an industry of its own! Italy & France continue to be the epicenter of creating aromatic concoctions today!
Certainly, there are those that may believe wearing perfume will mask disagreeable body odor. While it may, that is not the best reason to wear perfume. You should wear a scent to compliment your personality. You may prefer one scent when you are happy. Another fragrance may boost your confidence! Still, another may help you relax!
We may wear perfume to feel attractive. It is pleasing when someone compliments our scent. Our mood tends to lift with this admiration! A man may feel more masculine. A woman feels more feminine. There tends to be an air of sophistication around a man that wears his scent well! A memorable scent makes a woman’s perception more alluring & confident in herself! Likewise, a marvelous fragrance gives a lasting impression!
You may have found an aroma that relieves stress. Furthermore, it may help with restlessness & a better night’s sleep.
A bouquet of smells can still bring back the memory of a Grandmother’s kitchen! There are certain fragrances that relieve a headache. Similarly, a particular essence will energize senses. Another can give a feeling of tranquility. Consequently, a favorite morning scent may deliver a sense of rejuvenation and excitement knowing we can conquer anything!
Finally, the most important reason to wear perfume is to present your individuality to those around you and the world!
And the day’s outfit is not complete without that scent on one’s skin! And when it’s Discount Perfume, it’s that much better….
