Making Dirt Cups for Kids is one of the Most Fun you can have in a Day! This is especially true when a child has been told they are Not allowed to Eat Dirt!
Because at Grandma’s House Anything Goes!
Not only can you have tons of fun, but this activity can be educational too. You know kids learn by experimenting. That’s why most, if not all, kids explore by putting things in their mouths. This happens as soon as they can reach, grasp, and move any object straight to their mouth! From that point on, it’s a constant litany of “Don’t Put That in Your Mouth!” OR “Don’t put Your Mouth on That!”.
How many times have you seen a child start to lick the handle on a grocery cart? How many kids have eaten paper? Or how about glue? Crayons, anyone? When my daughter was little it was Candles! Especially the ones that smelled like Vanilla!
You can’t blame them for trying out certain things. It may smell good, great, or even horrible! No matter how it smells, that smell sparks curiosity! If it smells a certain way, then how does it Taste? Or, it’s so pretty! So, it Must Taste good too! Then there is the texture… Cold. Hot. Soft. Gritty…. So Many Textures! So, of course, it’s just Got to Be put into the Mouth! #DirtCups
Of course, they know nothing about all those toxins, bacteria, or parasites out there!
Although we may be scared to death of all those things they could be putting into their little bodies, we shouldn’t keep our children from exploring the world around them….
So, let’s have a talk about what we Don’t want to put in our mouths (or eyes & ears for that matter)! And at the same time, we can be having FUN with Experimenting …..
What you need:
- 1 Package Instant Pudding
- 2 Cups Cold Milk
- About 10 Cookies (We like Oreos) – maybe…. Pulverized in our Food Processor
* You can also do more cookies – depending on how much dirt you want
- Gummy Worms (We like Sour & Rainbow)
- Sugar Eye Balls
Make Some Dirt Cups for Kids
Start with Any Kind of Pudding….
Have the kids whip it up…. Then when they see it go from liquid to a semi-solid form, you can talk about all the reasons Refrigeration makes a difference …. Here’s a perfect opening to Food Safety & Science…. #Pudding
Almost any kind of Cookie makes GREAT Dirt! We Love our Oreos! But Chips Ahoy & Nutter Butters are also wonderful….. You can always use your very own homemade cookies too…. This is also an opportunity to allow those grandkids to get their hands dirty! Just allow them to beat up those cookies until they are DIRT! You know that rolling pin & those Ziplock bags work GREAT!
If you really want to get creative, you can even add in pieces of Cake or Brownies… That way those kids get to try out even more textures…. Just let them tear it up with their Hands!
Now, when we add in cake or brownies, my kids call these the Garbage Dump Cups. Furthermore, they will search my pantry, refrigerator & even the freezer because they Love finding weird & wonderful things they can add to our Dirt or Garbage Dump Cups….
The “Standard” Dirt Cups for Kids
So, when we are sticking to the original Dirt cup, we start with Pudding. Then, we add in some Gummy Worms & of course, that Gummy Poop! (Those are Mini M&M’s for those of you that don’t understand “kid-speak”). Now, just to be clear: Mini M&M’s are the Rainbow Gummy Worms’ poop. But Mini Chocolate Chips are “Mystery Bugs” poop at Grandma’s house… Don’t forget those Eye Balls! They are the perfect addition to our Dirt Cups for Kids! Then add in more Dirt, worms, eyeballs & poop.
