Wine Terminology
Vinification is the process of making Wine. And Vinology is the Scientific Study of Wine & Winemaking. Furthermore, Oenology & Enology are both the science of wine and winemaking. Now a Sommelier is a wine butler or a certified wine professional. But most important of all, we are Oenophiles, also known as wine aficionados, connoisseurs, or Lovers of Wine!
A bottle of Young wine is an immature wine typically bottled & sold within the year of its vintage. Young wines should be crisp & fresh! More importantly, a Mature wine means it’s ready to drink!
When your wine feels rich & thick on the palate it has Weight. But when you discuss how the wine feels on the palate, you are describing the Texture.
When you taste a harmony of fruit, alcohol, acidity & tannins, this is the Structure. The Nose describes the aromas & bouquets. Whether it feels furry, velvety, smooth, or rough on the palate, this is called Mouth-feel. The lingering sensation that persists once you’ve swallowed your wine is called the Length.
A wine that is high in flavors & alcohol is defined as Full-Bodied. Flavors are the odors sensed in your mouth. The impression of flavors & textures, once you’ve swallowed the wine, is the Finish. When you describe the weight & fullness of your wine when it is in your mouth, you are discussing the Body. Somewhat confusing; the Aroma is the smell of wine. But the Bouquet is defined as the complex aromas in aged wine.
