Traditional Cinnamon Sugar Desserts

Cinnamon Sugar Desserts

These tasty treats have become our Tradition! Whatever brings a family together, right? But if you really don’t like Cinnamon, you could go with another traditional favorite & only sprinkle this hot doughy confection with plain sugar…..

If you are feeling really adventurous, you could eat them without any sprinkles at all. OR another idea…. FILL these scrumptious treats with a savory taste, such as garlic & herb cream cheese………

The Invention of Cinnamon Sugar Desserts.

So, who invented fried dough? Have you ever wondered? We could argue that the invention of frying anything wasn’t great for our arteries….. But ever since a vehicle, namely pottery & oil came together, human beings have found ways to FRY stuff! So, we can blame our ancestors back as long ago as 8000-5500 BC for those clogged arteries! #Churros #Dolci

Fried Dough Around the World

Fine Wine Delivered

Would it be a safe bet to say every Country or every Culture has its version of fried dough? Well, let’s see…..

Of course, there are Churros. But they seem to cause arguments when discussing their origins. There are 2 versions: churros originate from Spain. OR others claim it was the Portuguese that brought the recipe with them when they traveled to other countries.

But let’s take a trip to Turkey. Their Tulumba is just like churros with 2 differences. Their length is shorter & syrup soaks them. Maybe a Portuguese & Turkish recipe came together at some time in the past. Huh. Something to think about… Or at least the potential of a Great Romantic Drama………

But let’s travel around the world some more……

As you may know, France brings us the delectable Beignet… This yeasty, puffy fried dough is fantastic with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. You might even get away with telling yourself it’s a little bit healthier if you add some fruit to this exquisite snack…

Now, we all know that America has truly made the doughnut it’s own! Whether you like little bits of bacon crumbled on your maple topping or just a plain glazed, we’ve completely taken this invention & run with it! Is there even a corner without a doughnut shop on it? Can you even go into a grocery store & NOT find any doughnuts? Don’t think so! But seriously, Doughnuts go all the way back to ANCIENT European times……..

Can you imagine if there was a rule that American’s ONLY eat doughnuts on Tuesdays & Thursdays? We’d probably have a riot, right? Just kidding…. But all joking aside, I once heard someone say that a Paczki was Just a Polish Doughnut. You make Paczki, the Polish “doughnut” quite differently than “American” doughnuts. You make these heavenly doughnuts with yeast, milk, eggs & butter. Therefore, they tend to be much richer in taste. And once you get to the sweet filling, you are going to want another! Maybe, even, possibly a THIRD! But back to our only eating doughnuts on Tuesdays or Thursdays.  Traditionally, Paczki is so special it is reserved to be eaten ONLY on Fat Thursday in Poland or Fat Tuesday if you live in the United States. So, can you hold out Once a Year to enjoy these phenomenal Polish sweet-filled delicacies?!

Other Countries ~ Other versions of Cinnamon Sugar Desserts & more

Check out the Israeli Sufganiyah. This jelly-filled doughnut seems to have made its way into our favorite donut shop. But this fried dough has very special significance. This fried sweet is eaten to remember the Maccabees’ victory over Greek oppression & the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem. This feast of Dedication, or Hanukkah, celebrates one cruse of oil lasting 8 entire days, instead of only One Day!

The Portuguese culture also has a hole-less donut. Their name is Malasada. This fried dough is a flat round piece of dough dropped in hot oil. But when it is done, its puffiness is ready for cinnamon sugar, sugar, or even powdered sugar sprinkling all over them. Of course, when filling them with coconut cream or Haupia, as it is known in Hawaii, we need MORE than ONE!

Then there is the Croatian/Serbian doughnut called Krofne. When these hole-less doughnuts are fried, they come out filled with air that makes a great reservoir for sweet fillings of any kind. Sometimes these delectable sweeties are known to be filled with some Rum too….. Just saying.

Balls of Cinnamon Sugar Desserts

So, if you are ever in the neighborhood, make sure you try some of Greek’s Loukoumades. These luscious, adorable fried dough balls just ask that you pop them in your mouth! Their topping is honey & cinnamon. So, we could say honey is natural sugar, right? And cinnamon is actually great for heart health! So, what’s one more, right?

Then, when you travel on over to Italy be ready! The Italian fried dough balls are called Zeppole. Now, you could eat the ones covered in powdered sugar or even cinnamon sugar. But stuff them with cannoli cream or even chocolate and we declare they are our Fave! If you do plan a trip to Italy, be sure to check your calendar. Zeppole are a traditional treat served during the celebration of St. Joseph’s Day.

If you would rather visit Naples, Italy, make sure it’s during Christmas time. Then you will find Struffoli, which are little balls of fried dough, piled up & smothered with honey.

Now let’s talk about how you can Top all these doughnut holes. All you need to do is take a trip into Germany & check out their Schneeballen. These are not only fried balls of dough! When making these “snowballs” the directions are very specific. First, you cut the dough into strips using a cutter like a ravioli wheel. This makes a pretty design when you roll the strips into a ball. Then you fry the balls & cover them with your favorite toppings. Like those Cinnamon Sugar Desserts. But cover them with coconut shavings, powdered sugar, chocolate, or just plain sugar…. And You are in HEAVEN!
