What kind of Dirt Do Grapes Need?
Have you ever thought of Dirt when you are drinking a glass of wine? Like from our bottle of Parables in Red?
The intensity & complexity of dark cherry, blackberry, plum, spice & EARTH did not just happen all by happenstance! These soft tannins with dark berry flavors pair spectacularly with our Beef Bourguignon! Get the recipe here….
But, getting back to the DIRT! Why does Dirt matter?
The aromas & tastes of a Wine can be considered an expression of its origins. Many vintners (winemakers) study Pedology (the study of soil) & but also Edaphology (the study of the influence of soil). #Funny
Did you know that if the soil is healthy for the vines, it is not necessarily good for the growth of the grapes? If the Vines growth is flourishing, then the grapes that are produced will be lighter in color. Their flavor will be bland & low in sugar. This is due to the nutrients from the DIRT going into the Vines & NOT the GRAPES!
Memes Are Fun BUT Dirt Matters!
When there are fewer nutrients & water in the soil, grapes hit the ripening phase earlier. This also means they get higher sugar levels & the aromas mature more quickly. Hence sandy soils produce lighter softer tannins but more fragrant wines.
While clay soil contains more moisture causing the grapes to ripen slower. This produces grapes that are high in acidity and tannins. This produces some of the best & boldest red & whites!
Comparatively, Volcanic Soil produces some of the highest quality grapes in the world! This is due to the high mineral content & porous quality of the soil. The vines root easily but the growth is hindered due to the lack of moisture content in the soil. So, we could say the vines are wimpy & they produce less fruit than vines in other types of soil. BUT the fruit that is born is High Quality! Some of these BEST Areas are in Napa Valley California!
